GNYAIRT Chapter Update June 28, 2016

Hi Everyone,
I would like to start this update by thanking everyone who filled out the feedback survey and/ or came to our GNYAIRT brainstorming chapter meeting. As a result of your input the GNYAIRT Board has decided to focus on including more IMAGO related material in our chapter meetings. We hope that will satisfy both our long term members while offering those new to imago an incentive to attend our meetings. We are also going to reach out to those therapists who are now in training or have recently completed their training. We hope to put in place a buddy system to help new members feel more welcome and included. If any of you are interested in being a buddy please contact. Barbara Mitchell – [email protected]

Thanks also to Clayton Horsey who has completed his term as GNYAIRT’s Treasury and big welcome to Pamela Wood who has stepped up to become our new treasurer. I would also like to thank Ellen Weber who continues to serve as our representative to IRI’s global committee.

As a result of your input we will also be looking into getting NYS Ceus. Anyone interested in helping to facilitate the process please contact me ([email protected]).

Not all our feedback came from our surveys or our brainstorming meeting some came from our direct observations. For the past several years the attendance at our Chapter tea has fallen off. The group and board felt that we might like to try something less formal and more playful to attract some of our newer members. So we came up with a “Spring Fling for GNYAIRT Friends and Family” details to follow. At this point I would like to give a big shout out to Robert Marantz for allowing us to host our Tea at his beautiful home. Thank you so much for your years of generosity and hospitality.

Please save the following dates for next year. (More detailed information will follow in weeks to come)

One of the most significant insights to come out of the meeting was how important this community is to our members. Because that is what we are – A community. Yes, it is IMAGO that has brought us together but the reason we stay is the amazing connection we feel toward one another. This is a community that loves to learn and share its knowledge and learning with one another. Many or most of us have been trained in a multitude of therapeutic modalities and have acquired many skills over the years which we share and bring back to our community. Most of us are sole practitioners and having a community of like minded people to connect with, helps to eliminate the isolation one tends to feel in such a situation. We are a community who still feels excitement and passion with our profession. It is for all this that we want to preserve, maintain and grow our community. We want to share this community with those new to IMAGO because we love to share.

Chapter meeting International Clinical Update: One of the most amazing things about IMAGO is that although it’s fundamental Theory and Process remain, Master Practitioners have continued to expand the knowledge base as well as it’s application to other formats such as working with siblings, inter-generational relationships, work conflicts; even peace initiatives (Palestinians and Israelis). At this meeting, those members who have attended the meetings and workshops in Long Beach, CA will share/teach us some of their new IMAGO wisdom. If you plan on attending please notify Linda Schnapp 914-381-0311 so she can coordinate presenters.

March 3, 2017 noon – 2pm
Chapter meeting Barbara Mitchell – Imago and Money Issues
Excerpt from a previous GNYAIRT newsletter: We know that partners are often wounded at the same stage but develop opposite adaptations. So what we see is a struggle over the use of money for different emotional needs—a power struggle like any other, but acted out in the realm of money.
But since we also know that “conflict is growth trying to happen”, helping the couple to unravel the unconscious meaning that money represents for each of them loosens the hold it has on their psyches, opening the way for other choices. The couples dialogue fosters empathy and connection as each partner enters the money world of the other.
Barbara will demonstrate working with a couple using the Imago dialogue and theory on Money Issues.

GNYAIRT FRIENDS AND FAMILY TEA – TBA

Feb 26, 2016 WORKSHOP 10am – 4pm
William Doherty – will present on “Discernment Counseling” the new approach for couples on the brink.

William Doherty PhD is a professor and Director of the Minnesota Couples on the Brink Project at the University of Minnesota. His books include “Take Back your Marriage,“ “Take Back your Kids” and “Family Therapy” with Susan McDaniel.
Discernment Counseling is a way for couples to look at their options before making a final decision about divorce. Is most appropriate for couples where one partner wants to preserve and repair the relationship and the other is leaning towards ending it. Research shows that this kind of ‘mixed agenda’ is common among couples approaching divorce, and there is a dearth of special services for them. It also a common (and difficult) presentation in couples counseling. Discernment counseling is different from regular marriage counseling in three ways: a) the goal is not to solve problems in the relationship, but to figure out whether the problems can be solved; b) the process involves mainly individual conversations with each partner since they have different needs and agendas and c) it is always short term

April 15, 2016 WORKSHOP 10am – 4pm
Lynn Lyons – will present on “Intergenerational Anxiety”

Anxiety is a very persistent master. When it moves into families, it takes over daily routines, schoolwork, bedtime, and recreation. This workshop teaches concrete counter intuitive strategies that normalize worry for families including: 1) expecting worried to show up and talking to it; 2) learning to be unsure and uncomfortable on purpose; 3) helping clients stay focused on what they want not what they want to avoid; 4) helping them remember their skills and strengths to keep moving forward.
Lynn Lyons LICSW, specializes in the treatment of anxious families and is the co-author of Anxious Kids, Anxious Parents and the companion book Playing with Anxiety Casey’s Guide for Teens and Kids.

Discounts are available to GNYAIRT members only.

For those who wish to attend all 3 workshop there is a discount price of $450.
For those who wish to attend any 2 workshops the discount price is $370.
To sign up on line for these workshops please go to imagonewyork.com. Log in as a member, and go to the event calendar, click on the earliest event you wish to attend. Then click on the combination that suits you best and pay on line. If you chose to register and pay by check you can do that by clicking paying with “check”. You can then mail your check to me at GNYAIRT c/o Irene Azar, 61 Irving Place, apt 3C, New York, NY 10003. Please write on the check which workshops you will be attending.

This might be a good time to remind you of our refund policy.

Refunds creates extra work for us and defeats our desire to know if we can open up the workshop to others. In addition, we are charged both a fee and a percentage of the price by PayPal. When Clayton or I write a refund check it costs us time, money, also necessitating extra record and bookkeeping responsibilities and missed opportunity to offer the ticket to someone else.

All refunds will be pro-rated according to the discount provided. For example – you paid $450 for 3 workshops and can now attend only 1, you will receive a refund check of $255 minus $25 to cover the costs of the fees we incurred. You paid $450 for 3 and can now only attend 2, you will receive a refund check of $80 minus $25 to cover the costs of the fees we incurred. You paid $370 for 2 and can now only attend 1, you will receive a refund check of $175 minus $25 to cover the costs of the fees we incurred.

There will be only a 50% refund for cancellations during the 7 days preceding a workshop. Of course you are always welcome to offer your place to a colleague or friend.

We hope this is clear and eliminates confusion.

GNYAIRT CHAPTER UPDATE 4-28-2014

A big thank you to Clayton Horsey who led a panel on “Counter-transference in Psychotherapy” and to the panel of presenters, Jerry Katz, Cheryl Dolinger Brown and Barbara Mitchell who shared some of their own experiences on the subject. This was followed by a group discussion.

ELECTION RESULTS Also announced at the Chapter meeting are the results of the election. Irene S. Azar is the new president, Judith Clarke is now vice president and Clayton Horsey will continue on as Treasurer and Lauren Levy will continue on as Secretary. Linda Schnapp and Charlotte Wolovsky will continue to head up our Continuing education committee and Barbara Mitchell as the outgoing President will continue to offer support and council to the board.

Trainee Delegate: It was also announced that Marisa Schnapp has been appointed as our first ever Trainee Delegate to the Board. It is the board’s hope and desire that having a liaison to the new therapists in training will increase their participation and connection to our Chapter.

We are also looking for a volunteer to be our (the GNYAIRT) delegate to the IRI international Committee. The committee meets once a month using a conference phone call connection and once a year in person just a few days before the IRI conference. This year the conference will be near Washington DC so it is quite doable by car. This is a wonderful opportunity to make world wide connections in the IMAGO community as well as have some impact on IMAGO world wide. If this sounds like something you might like to know more about please contact Clayton Horsey who was our former delegate. [email protected]

Linda Schnapp spoke about our next workshop presenter Lisa Ferentz – May 16 2014.
Both Marisa and Linda urged us not to miss this opportunity. Lisa is a day long presenter at the Family Networker Conference and is invited back year after year. She is a dynamic speaker and presenter. Lisa has published 2 books “Treating Self-destructive Behaviors in Trauma Survivors: A Clinician’s Guide” and most recently “Letting go of Self Destructive Behaviors: Workbook of Hope and Healing”. To learn more about Lisa go to http://www.lisaferentz.com/about-us/faculty/lisa-ferentz-lcsw-c-dapa/
To sign up email [email protected].

Do you wish to present? Deadline for consideration in next years lineup is 5/18/2014.
Linda also made a request that those members who would like to present at either a workshop or a chapter meeting should fill out the attached form and send it to Linda ASAP. Also if you know of someone who might be of interest as a presenter at a chapter meeting or as a workshop presenter they too will need to fill out the form for consideration. Please send the completed form to [email protected]
